How can I make my home winter ready?

It’s no secret that Connecticut winters can get pretty rough. That’s why ensuring your home is winter ready is so important. Not only will this make for a more comfortable season, it will also prevent you and guests in your home from experiencing serious injuries, which could lead to legal issues if a third party chooses to file suit. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention offer the following tips in this case, which will make for a safe and happy winter.

Ice accumulation on walkways and driveways is the cause of many serious accidents. That’s why property owners must take the proper steps to remove ice. Along with shoveling snow, sprinkling salt, sand, or even cat litter increases tractions and prevents slip-and-fall accidents. When working outside, be sure to dress appropriately to protect yourself from the cold. This entails wearing hats and gloves, along with warm clothing.

Ice can also build up on your roof during winter. Along with causing damage to your home, icicles may cause injury if they melt and strike a person below. Preventing heat loss in your attic will stop ice from collecting at the edge of your roof. Additionally, be sure to clean out gutters during fall, so water can freely flow away from your roof before it has time to freeze.

You also want to make sure your home’s heating system is working appropriately by having it inspected. If you have a fireplace, make sure it’s properly ventilated before use. You also want to check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Test detectors at least once a month, and if it’s been more than six months since you replaced batteries it’s best to do so now.
