Examining the potential impact of a slip-and-fall accident

Many in New Haven may buy into the notion that America has become a litigious society. They may point to incidents involving slips and falls and say that such accidents do not warrant legal action. This may come from the assumption that one would not likely sustain serious injuries in a fall. Yet statistics seem to indicate that incidents as seemingly benign as a ground-level fall can actually result in serious health consequences.

Typically, the elderly are most at-risk for experiencing serious injuries in a slip-and-fall accident. Yet that does not mean that younger, able-bodied adults cannot be affected by them as well. While a slip-and-fall accident may be unlikely to result in a fatality (especially amongst the aforementioned demographic), it can produce other costly outcomes. For example, the National Floor Safety Institute reports that falls are the most common cause of emergency room visits in the U.S., with over 8 million occurring annually. Fractures are the most common result of such incidents, which can require those that suffer them to undergo extensive recovery (and potentially, rehabilitation). These results can directly contribute to another problem the NFSI links to ground-level falls: Days away from work. Indeed, it lists slip-and-fall accidents as being the primary cause for workers' compensation claims.

Study results shared by the National Institutes of Health show falls from slipping, tripping or stumbling to be the most common reason behind fall accidents by far. If and when those accidents are due to unsafe property conditions, those who suffer them may feel justified in seeking compensation. Given that the same research shows that the average hospital stay associated with such accidents is 4.6 days (coupled with the other potential results mentioned previously), accident victims may be left with little choice but to do so.
