Connecticut's evolving workers' compensation laws

When it comes to work injuries, many connect accidents with industries such as construction or oil companies. However, a plethora of different industries across the nation also see a substantial number of accidents ranging from mild mishaps to fatal tragedies. Connecticut's workers' compensation laws continually change to best meet the needs of workers, with the common goal of getting employees back to good health and back to the job.

The University of Connecticut released statistical data last year that concluded the state was above the national average in terms of work-related accidents. In the article for Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, data shows the 8 percent increase in workplace injuries and illnesses--making the seventh straight year the state has remained above the national average. However, some of the reported complications include preventable illnesses, which is troubling to researchers and Connecticut workers alike. The study also shares the occupations with the highest rates of injury and illness, as listed below:

  • Education and health
  • Government
  • Manufacturing
  • Transportation and utilities

This list may seem shocking to many, as the occupations are not generally known for high-risk factors. The exact reason for these high rates is largely uncertain, but the university adds that rates vary across Connecticut's towns and cities, as well.

The numbers may prove unsettling, but Connecticut passed a new law last month that could make workers' compensation processes simpler for affected employees. The law allows employers to post employee claim filing locations in the workplace. Having taken affect on October 1, 2017, employers may now provide the location to which employees may file a claim for workers' benefits. It is the employer's responsibility to post this information alongside other important lawful notices in the workplace.
