Distraction, impairment and restraints part of jump in deaths

When shopping for new cars, trucks or other passenger vehicles, Connecticut residents see the many safety features now included in so many vehicles. From airbags to braking assistance and more, there seems to be no end to the number of technological advances put into service for the primary goal of keeping people safe on the road. Sadly, however, all the safety features in the world seem to be unable to make the necessary dent in the tragic number of people who die on U.S. roads.

Information released by the National Safety Council paints a bleak picture. Despite more safety features being available in vehicles and more effort put into awareness of safety topics, the number of people killed in traffic accidents in 2016 was 14 percent higher than in 2014. Data shows that in 2007, more than 40,000 traffic fatalities were recorded in the U.S. The nation enjoyed a drop in traffic deaths for several years until now. The jump from 2014 to 2016 is the biggest in nearly 50 years.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately one out of every three traffic deaths involves some type of impairment. One out of every two people killed in auto accidents was not wearing a seat belt. Add to these longstanding causes of traffic deaths newer dangers like the use of social media while driving and the risks continue to grow.

When an accident occurs for any reason, Connecticut residents deserve help. Talking to an attorney may be a good way to learn what type of compensation may be available.
