Sometimes a headache is more than just a headache

Whether you fell, had a car accident or were involved in some other sort of incident, you may or may not recall hitting your head or a blow to the head. You may have gone to the doctor for a thorough examination, received treatment for other injuries and then went home to get some rest.

While resting, you realized that you had a tremendous headache. You figured it was an after effect of the accident, took something for the pain and went about your business. Over the next couple of days, you realized that the headache still hasn't gone away and may be worse. You decide that there may be more to your headache than you first realized and begin to watch yourself for other signs of something more serious.

What would those signs include?

The question is what other signs to look for besides a worsening headache. Those symptoms may include the following:

  • Problems speaking
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Problems sleeping
  • Drowsiness
  • Anxiety
  • Dizziness
  • Balance problems
  • Sleeping more than usual
  • Blurred vision
  • Ear ringing
  • Mood swings
  • Problems concentrating
  • Memory problems
  • Changes in smells

You could even notice a bad taste in your mouth. If you lost consciousness at any point for any length of time, you may want to seek immediate medical attention due to this and other signs of a traumatic brain injury. Even if you remained conscious the whole time, feelings of confusion or disorientation could signal that something isn't right.

You may wonder why your doctor failed to diagnose a TBI when you first went for a checkup. Sometimes, it can take hours to days for the symptoms to appear. That is why it's crucial that you seek medical attention at the first indication of one or more of the above signs. People have walked around for days with these symptoms and died from a TBI.

Did someone else cause your TBI?

If your TBI resulted from the negligent, reckless or intentional actions of another party, you may be able to receive compensation for your injuries. Even if you are lucky enough not to suffer any lasting effects, it could take you a significant amount of time to recover. During that time, you could incur substantial financial losses due to medical care and time off work. You may benefit from taking advantage of the legal resources in your Connecticut community as you attempt to obtain payment for your monetary losses from the person deemed responsible.
