3 winter hazards to be aware of (and hopefully avoid)

Winter weather can make even the simplest task tedious and risky. Everything from driving to work to walking the dog presents a new level of danger when there is ice, snow and frigid temperatures to contend with.

Sadly, many Connecticut residents suffer serious injuries in accidents during the winter months. Below are a few of the most common winter-related hazards that could lead to serious accidents.

  1. Car accidents: Whether your car hits black ice or the driver in front of you fails to clear the snow from his or her car, you typically never see a crash coming. Driving slowly and staying alert can help you avoid certain dangerous situations on the road.
  2. Slipping on wet floors: When people come inside, they take with them the snow and ice on their shoes. Property owners should be proactive in keeping these areas dry and warning others of wet, slippery floors.
  3. Falling on poorly-lit or poorly-cleared walkways: In winter, it gets dark earlier in the evening, making it difficult to see when you are outside. Sidewalks and entrances should be properly lit and cleared of obstacles like toys, boots and shovels.

There are many steps you can take to avoid these and other hazards, including those mentioned above and others found in this helpful article. But unfortunately, you may not be able to avoid all winter weather hazards, especially when someone else failed to properly clear or warn you of them.

Under these circumstances, victims of an accident causing damages may have grounds to pursue legal action against a negligent party. Filing a personal injury or premises liability claim can't undo the damage that has already been done, but it can help victims and their families recover from physical, emotional and financial injuries.
