How can you avoid an accident with a drunk driver?

Many Connecticut motorists worry about being involved in a crash with a drunk driver. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol intoxication causes approximately 30 deaths daily in the United States. A drunk driving accident can also cause serious injuries. Although it is impossible to prevent every single death of this nature, there are ways in which you can to protect yourself and others.

If you go out drinking, bring a designated driver. If you can't drive, call a friend or family member to pick you up or take a cab home. Don't risk driving home and possibly getting into a crash and injuring yourself or others. Look out for others as well. If you notice someone has been drinking, take away their car keys and offer them a ride home. If you have parties at your house, try to serve beverages besides alcohol. If you do serve alcoholic drinks, don't let anyone leave your house and drive drunk.

Besides these points, there are also ways in which law enforcement and the community can prevent accidents caused by a drunk driver. Drunk driving laws should be enforced each and every time a motorist is found to be intoxicated. With the minimum drinking age of 21 and 0.08 the legal limit in most states, states should enact strict penalties for motorists who go over the limit or are caught drinking and driving when they are under the legal age to even drink alcohol. These penalties should include substance abuse treatment, fines and license revocation.

Sobriety checkpoints can also help identify drunk drivers before they injure or kill others. They have been proven to reduce crashes by almost 10 percent.
