Driver's reckless actions result in multiple-vehicle accident

Traffic laws exist for a reason and drivers who fail to abide by laws pertaining to speeding, tailgating and drinking and driving put not only their lives in danger, but also those of other drivers and passengers. A recent multiple-vehicle car accident in Connecticut illustrates how the reckless actions of one driver can put the lives of many more at risk.

On a recent Sunday afternoon, drivers traveling along Interstate 84 noticed a van speeding down the right shoulder of the freeway. At this same time, a man was traveling in the same direction in the right lane of the freeway when he his car was hit by the van. The force of the collision caused the van to careen left and crash into a truck before crashing and flipping over a guard rail and traveling some 50 feet down an embankment before coming to a stop.

Police report that a total of 14 people were injured in the multiple-vehicle accident, including the driver of the van who was ejected from the vehicle. In addition to the driver, 12 other individuals ranging in age from 13 to 80 were occupants in the van at the time of the accident.

Two of the individuals involved in the serious crash suffered injuries serious enough to warrant transportation to the hospital via helicopter. First responders also forcibly extricated at least two of the van occupants and a total of 11 people were taken by ambulance to the hospital.

While police are still investigating the accident, it's clear that speed and general recklessness were contributing factors. In this case, miraculously no one was critically injured or killed. However, 14 people were injured and some of these individuals may choose to take legal action against the driver of the van.
